Military Spouse Education Benefits – Opportunities and How to Use Them

Hello, I’m Aki, a mother of two kids and a military spouse living in the U.S. for 7 years. When I first moved to the United States, I was so excited. I was enthusiastic about starting a new chapter of my life in a new environment. But as time passed, I realized that to keep that excitement going, I needed to have my own career. I graduated with a degree in hotel management in Korea. However, I soon learned that my degree wasn’t easily recognized in the U.S. My English skills were not at the level required for the job market. I decided to go to college.

For a few years after marriage, I focused solely on raising my kids and supporting my husband, continuing my career in Korea. But eventually, the thought “Can I start my new career again?” crossed my mind. I didn’t want to put my dreams on hold anymore, and I wanted to be a proud mom for my kids.

That’s when I first learned about the educational benefits for military spouses. Once I became aware of these programs, I started to notice military family benefits everywhere. The U.S. government and various organizations offer support to help military spouses start a new career through job training or academic programs. These programs provided me with the opportunity to inspire my dreams, not just financial relief.

I hope this article will be helpful for those who want to restart their careers or continue their education as a military spouse. I’ll share practical, useful information based on my experience with these programs.

Life as a military spouse is full of new challenges, but there are endless opportunities within that. Just like I did, I hope these benefits help you rediscover your dreams and possibilities.

MyCAA Program: Eligibility and Benefits

MyCAA (Military Spouse Career Advancement Account) is a program that offers educational and job training opportunities for military spouses, providing up to $4,000 in tuition assistance.

Eligibility:

  • Military members’ rank must be E1-E5, W1-W2, O1-O2
  • Excludes bachelor’s programs; focuses on certification and job training programs

Benefits:

  • Covers costs for up to 2 years of certification programs and job training
  • Helps cover the key costs for career transition

My Opinion: Since my husband’s rank was higher than O-2, I wasn’t eligible for this program. But I think this is a great support option for military spouses. Before deciding on a certification or program in your area of interest, it’s important to research thoroughly. You should check reviews and understand how valid these certifications are in the job market. Additionally, be cautious about inefficient programs that exist just for government funding. I also recommend consulting with a career counselor in MyCAA. They can provide you with a list of trustworthy programs and guide you in making the best decision based on your situation.

Best Online Degree Programs for Military Spouses

Online degrees offer flexibility, making them an ideal educational option for military spouses. With frequent relocations and busy family schedules, online degree programs can be a huge advantage.

Recommended Universities and Their Features:

  • University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC):
    • Offers tuition discounts for military families
    • Credits military experience and prior education
  • Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU):
    • Offers fast-track programs
    • 100% online courses
  • Purdue Global:
    • Offers a wide range of degrees in IT, business, nursing, and more
    • Practical, hands-on education programs

Advantages of Online Degrees:

  • Study anytime, anywhere, regardless of military moves
  • Manage time and costs efficiently
  • Balance family life and studies with a flexible schedule

My Opinion: While researching, I found these programs to be helpful, but I also think it’s essential to do in-depth research to find what suits you. Many military spouses choose careers like nursing that offer flexibility to work from anywhere. If you are considering a job like nursing or another flexible career, it’s important to check if the necessary degrees or certifications can be completed online. If you’re raising kids, the flexibility of online programs is especially valuable, allowing you to study without the constraints of time and place. I experienced this firsthand when I was taking online courses during the pandemic, and I found it to be incredibly beneficial. For military spouses, I highly recommend considering these options! 😊

The VA provides education benefits for military spouses and children, offering great opportunities to reduce the cost of education.

GI Bill Benefits for Military Spouses

One of the biggest educational benefits for military spouses is the GI Bill. This program supports active-duty service members, veterans, and their families with education costs. Military spouses and children can transfer the benefits if certain conditions are met.

GI Bill Key Benefits:

  • Tuition Assistance: Covers part or all of tuition and fees
  • Housing Allowance (BAH): Provides financial support for living expenses during studies
  • Books and Supplies: Covers the cost of required textbooks and materials
  • Support for Certification and Training Programs: Can also be used for technical training and certification programs

How to Transfer GI Bill Benefits to a Spouse:

  • The service member must have completed at least 6 years of service and commit to 4 more years of service.
  • The transfer process is done through the VA and must be done by the service member.

The GI Bill can be a game-changer for military spouses who are hesitant to continue their education due to financial concerns. It can greatly reduce the burden and help you design your future with no financial stress. Discuss this with your spouse to ensure you take full advantage of this benefit!

Personal Experience: I decided to use my husband’s GI Bill for my graduate school. I didn’t use it for my associate’s degree in Hawaii, but I saved it for grad school. My husband recently applied to transfer the benefits to me, and the approval took about a month. I’ll be sharing more details about this experience in my upcoming Military Spouse Guidebook.
